"We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us." – Joseph Campbell

Do you ever feel like you’re trapped in the waiting room of life? Not quite in the past, not fully in the future, but somewhere in this weird gray area where everything feels like it’s on pause? Welcome to living in limbo, my friend. Not the party game where you bend backward under a stick (though if you’re good at that, props to you), but the state of life where you’re stuck, uncertain, and maybe even a little bit lost.

But why do we call it limbo anyway? Well, it turns out this term has some deep roots. It comes from the Latin word limbus, meaning "border" or "edge." In medieval theology, it referred to a place where souls were stuck on the border of heaven and hell—waiting, suspended, and unsure where they’d end up. Cheerful, right? Over time, the word took on a broader meaning: being stuck in-between, that uncomfortable middle ground where nothing seems to move forward.

What Does Living in Limbo Look Like?

Maybe you’re waiting to hear back about a job offer. Maybe you’re in a relationship where you’re not sure if it’s going anywhere. Or perhaps you’re in a personal growth phase (aka the "I have no idea what I’m doing with my life" phase). Whatever your situation, limbo can feel like being on hold with customer service—except instead of annoying elevator music, your brain keeps playing loops of worry and self-doubt.

The emotions that come with limbo aren’t exactly a walk in the park either. You might feel:

  • Frustration: Why isn’t anything happening yet?!

  • Anxiety: What if this goes on forever?

  • Fear of the Unknown: What’s on the other side of this waiting game?

  • Loss of Control: I can’t move forward because nothing’s in my hands right now.

Sound familiar? Yeah, I’ve been there too. But here’s the thing: while limbo may feel like life’s most awkward pause, it’s not just wasted time. There’s a hidden gift in this phase—if you know how to look for it.

The Hidden Gifts of Limbo

I know, I know. The last thing you want to hear when you’re stuck is, “It’s all part of the journey.” (Ugh, right?) But hear me out! Limbo can actually offer some surprising opportunities for personal transformation:

  • Reflection Time: When life slows down, it’s a chance to reflect on what’s really important to you. What’s working? What’s not? What dreams have you been putting on hold?

  • Opportunities for Redirection: Sometimes being stuck is the universe’s way of saying, “Hey, maybe this isn’t your path.” Limbo might be nudging you toward something even better than what you were expecting.

  • Patience & Trust: Limbo teaches us to let go of the need to control everything. (Easier said than done, I know.) But learning to trust the process can be transformative.

How to Navigate Limbo Without Losing Your Mind

So how do you cope when life feels like one giant buffering screen? Here are a few tools to help you stay grounded:

  • Practice Mindfulness: Stay present. Focus on what’s happening right now instead of spiraling into future worries. Deep breaths, my friend. Deep breaths.

  • Take Small Actions: Even if you can’t control the big stuff, you can still move forward in small ways. Clean out that closet, take a class, or finally learn how to make sourdough bread (again).

  • Reframe the Experience: Instead of thinking, "I’m stuck," try thinking, "I’m in a period of transformation." It’s not limbo; it’s your life’s chrysalis phase.

  • Lean on Your Support System: Talk to friends, family, or a coach who can offer perspective. Sometimes just sharing what you’re feeling can lift a huge weight off your shoulders.

You Won’t Be in Limbo Forever

Here’s the good news: Limbo isn’t a permanent state. Eventually, things shift. The job offer comes, the next step becomes clear, or you suddenly realize you’ve outgrown the old version of yourself. When that happens, you’ll look back on this phase and see how it shaped you in ways you never expected.

So if you’re living in limbo right now, know that you’re not alone. It’s uncomfortable, sure. But it’s also a time of possibility, growth, and realignment. Embrace the uncertainty. Trust that the answers will come in time. And in the meantime, take a deep breath, dance under that metaphorical limbo stick, and remind yourself: you’ve got this.
